The cost of parking in New York is expensive and combined with the high
volume of traffic and car theft statistics, is enough to put many people off
driving a car whilst on their trip. The allotted parking areas and garages
display their rates at the entrances and although some hotels include
parking in their room rates, many do not and some charge their guests up to
$30 or $40 per day to park their cars.
There are parking meters in some areas, where you can park for a short while
– 20 minutes to an hour. If a meter is out of order don’t be tempted to park
there as you may return to find yourself with a parking ticket.
The Kinney Corporation seems to have a monopoly on parking rights for
garages in Midtown and will usually charge up to $30 per day to park your
car. There are less expensive parking lots; West Street in Chelsea is one of
them charging between $10 and $15 per day, but bear in mind there will be an
18.5% parking tax to be added to the rate.
To annoy you further there are more parking rules in operation, one known as
“alternative side of the street parking” whereby you must move your car to
the opposite side of the street several times a week in order to allow for
street cleaning. This is generally in operation on most of the city’s side
streets and your car must be moved before 8 am the next day.
