Rest assured children will never be bored when visiting New York. There are
plenty of activities and places that cater for the young. There are more
than a dozen theatre companies, plenty of museums and parks, two zoos and
the best of it is you don’t have to spend a fortune to ensure they have a
good time.
One of the highlights for children in New York is the chance to visit the
Big Apple Circus, this is one of New York’s TV studios where there are
plenty of activities for children – there simply isn’t enough time in one
day to get through them all.
New York is a family friendly place to visit and most of the hotels will
supply cots or cribs and allow children to stay in parents’ rooms for free.
The entrance fees into museums are usually half price or less for children
and some have free admission. Small children, less than 44 inches tall can
ride on subways and buses for free, as long as they are accompanied by an
adult. The best time for travelling is between 9am and 4pm to avoid the rush
hour.
There is a Rite Aid Pharmacy, which is open 24 hours a day, where medicines
and diapers are available. One thing to bear in mind is that finding a
changing table in public toilets can be quite hard, but people won’t object
to you using a counter for these purposes. The best places for baby changing
are the facilities in hotels, department stores and libraries. Baby sitting
can usually be arranged by the receptionist at your hotel. Another reliable
source is the Baby Sitters’ Guild.
Weekly listings for current children’s activities can be found in the New
York magazine and there is a free quarterly calendar of events, which is
widely available from the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau:
