Cycling in New York is not recommended for the faint hearted as it takes
nerves of steel trying to bob and weave between the gridlocked traffic.
If you insist on chancing your luck with the busy New York Streets and
Avenues keep your wits about you at all times, always wear a helmet and obey
the traffic laws. Most car drivers will regard you as a nuisance, so be
warned and make sure you ride defensively if you want to remain alive.
The other points to be aware of are car doors opening and car drivers that
won't think twice about cutting you up.
If you have to park your bike up, do so at your own risk as there is a good
possibility that it will be stolen. Thieves in New York can pick even the
most secure locks, so if you have to park your bike, try not to leave it
unattended for long.
The best places for cycling in New York are the park pathways but just make
sure it is during the hours of daylight. Central Park has some good pathways
for cycling and there are paths along the East and Hudson rivers. There are
a couple of longer rides, which are highly recommended - across the Brooklyn
Bridge to Prospect Park or Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Another great ride is
to take your bike on the Staten Island ferry and have an adventure across
the harbor.
