The sheer size of New York city is a disadvantage when it comes to losing
anything. The chances of recovering any lost are very slim as there are no
lost and found departments in the city.
Some taxi firms have a lost and found department and there are also
departments at the Grand Central Station and Penn Station. The staff here
will do their best to help you with any inquiries about lost items.
If you lose any valuables or possessions whilst in New York, always report
them to the police and remember to obtain a full copy of the police report
for your own insurance purposes. If you buy anything valuable while in New
York, always keep a record of receipts and make a note of any serial
numbers. Keep these in a hotel safe in case you need them for proof of
possession.
Remember to keep a separate copy of travellers’ cheque serial numbers in
case of loss. A good idea would be to write these down on a piece of paper
before you travel and on arriving deposit them in the hotel safe. Lost or
stolen credit cards should be reported immediately to your card issuer, they
will be able to block the card and stop a thief from using them.
