Jogging is enjoyed by many, especially in New York - but be aware that some
of the parks aren't safe, especially for people jogging alone. Jogging at
night and early morning isn't recommended at all. Central Park is the place
for joggers, there is a 6 mile road around the park where runners can get
away from the traffic, as it's closed to traffic from 10am to 3pm and 7pm
till 10pm on weekdays and all weekend. The most popular route in the park is
around the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, which is a soft 1.6 mile
path. Central Park is always a busy place with rollerbladers and cyclists,
so the reservoir route would be the option to get away from it all.
There is also a runner's pathway that starts along West Street and runs all
the way to Battery Park City. This is a good choice if you want to admire
the pleasant public park and fine views of the statue of Liberty as you jog.
The path on the Upper East Side runs along FDR Drive and the East River to
115th street - the path after 105th street isn't well lit so don't attempt
to go much further if you are running alone.
Chelsea Piers and the International Running Center hold weekly running
competitions and races.
If you have ever thought of running in the New York Marathon you'll need to
fill in an entry form up to six months in advance - over 25000 runners enter
every year.
The 26 mile Marathon is held on the first Sunday in November, starting in
Staten Island and finishing at the Tavern On The Green in Central Park.
