The US Open is one of the most prestigious Grand Slam events on the tennis
circuit and tickets for the semi-finals and final are very expensive. The
Open takes place in September at Flushing Meadow, Queens and if you want to
see a match it is recommended to book tickets well in advance. There is
Grandstand seating, which are uncomfortable uncovered planks - these are
taken on a first-come first-served basis. The box office is the place to buy
tickets for the early round matches and doubles games, but if you really
want to get your hands on a ticket for the finals, a ticket scalp may be
your only option. Be prepared to pay outrageous prices for these much sought
after tickets. Many companies in the US tend to buy blocks of tickets for
the Open well in advance as it is an extremely popular spectator sport in
America.
The Virginia Slims International Tournament takes place at Madison Square
Garden in November every year.
If you fancy playing instead of watching, the courts are rented out all year
round to amateurs for upwards of $25 per hour - these are the actual courts
the pros practise on!
The telephone directory also lists tennis courts where you can play - these
are under the headin "Tennis Courts - Public and Private"
For the public courts you will have to have a $50 permit and an identity
card. The permits are available from NY City Parks & Recreation Department.
